Description
Material selection, lip geometry and the strength of the garter springs all contribute to the seal stiction and friction and the ability to hold the oil inside. The best seals have the minimum amount of friction without leaking. What we see with cheaper seals is very hard rubbers and very stiff garter springs.
All fork stanchions are meticulously polished prior to installing new seals to eliminate surface damage and minimize friction. Seals and dust seals should always be replaced at the same time, as damage to the main seal usually means that the dust seal is also damaged, even if it looks ok.
